### Summary
The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (MSA) position serves as a Clinic Clerk and is a foundational role within the VHA Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) initiative as well as the VHA Patient Centered Medical Home Model transformation initiative. Patient care is delivered in a team based model known as the teamlet. Member of the teamlet include the MSA, a Registered Nurse Care Manager, a Licensed Practical Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse and a primary care provider. The teamlet provides the majority of the healthcare needs for an assigned panel of patients. The teamlet provides the majority of the healthcare needs for an assigned panel of patients. The teamlet works collaboratively with other members of an expanded health care primary care team including pharmacists, social workers, dieticians, behavioral health staff, etc. to provide a robust interdisciplinary approach to the coordinated care system providers including VA and non VA specialists, hospital, diagnostic and treating facilities, and community based programs.
**Work Schedule:Work Schedule:**Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. or as agreed upon. However, the incumbent may be required to work other shifts, be on call, work weekends and/or holidays as patient care and needs of the service require.

### Responsibilities
**You perform all administrative duties and captures business processes information necessary for the function of the PACT Team.**
* Customer service is essential in this role. You perform all administrative duties assigned for the proper and timely treatment of patients and maintains appointment schedules for one or more outpatient clinics
* You support patient safety standards using the correct Veterans Affairs identification of all patients using the approved protocols of patient identifiers
* You explain the VA's mandate to collect insurance information to veterans, their families, and other eligible patients. You collect, scan, and update health insurance information serving a major role in the revenue process
* A caring, compassionate and sensitive manner is essential when explaining procedures to veterans and their family members both in person and on the phone
* When records are received, you will ensure that all necessary health/administrative information are integrated into Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) by sending the documents to scanning team
* You must screen/receive phone calls in a courteous and timely manner, determine the nature of requests and provide the information desired using privacy rules and established clinic processes
* You must be able to interpret and communicate requirements of VHA Scheduling
**Directives and complete accurate scheduling responsibilities:**
* Schedule appointments and utilize the Electronic Waiting List accurately in a timely manner. All appointments will be made with the patient's input, either in person or by phone. This may require an elevated level of coordination to avoid patients having to make multiple trips to the medical center or clinic whenever possible
* You evaluate patient information and clinic schedule lists to determine whether patient is vested
* You are astute to co-managed patients and brings attention to the provider of these shared patients
* You notify your supervisor when clinic access is less than desirable or if an individual patient cannot be scheduled within mandated clinic timeframes
* You daily review the active/pending consults, Electronic Wait List, Recall list and Audiocare communications for accuracy and disposition
* Additional duties may be required to be performed, as needed

**Experience and Education**
* **Experience** - Candidates must possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-05 Medical Support Assistant) in a clinical setting.
* **Education**- There is no education substitution for this above full-performance level position.
**Preferred Experience:** Clerical experience in a medical setting is required for this position.

**(a) Experience.** One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
**(b) Assignment.** The Advanced MSA works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model (i.e., patient aligned care team, or other specialty care setting where the patient aligned care team model is used such as oncology, HIV, SCI, Military Sexual Trauma, etc.). The Advanced MSA coordinates with the patient care team to review the clinic utilization by using various reports (e.g., Clinic Utilization Statistical Summary), ensure that the clinic setup is closely monitored to effectively support the needs of the clinic, and make any necessary adjustments. They develop/maintain effective and efficient communication with the patient, interdisciplinary team, VA medical centers, and other agencies (e.g., assist with communications during the inpatient to outpatient discharge; communicate with non-VA medical facilities; facilitate/process secure messaging with the patient and team; notify patients of normal lab results; develop and manage a tracking system for follow up care such as consults, tests, etc.). Other assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: participating in team huddles and team meetings to manage and plan patient care; setting priorities and deadlines, adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient needs; may work with the team to reinforce the plan of care and self-help solutions and entering appropriate information into the electronic record; monitoring pre-appointment requirements to assure readiness for patient visit/procedure (e.g., X-ray, lab work); managing electronic wait list to verify and validate accuracy and resolve issues; participating and providing input in problem solving on operational issues or procedures in team meetings, performing administrative follow up actions; participating in and independently following up on team huddles by sharing information and collaborating with the medical team to assure continuity of care; evaluating patient information and clinic schedule lists to determine whether patient is vested; educating providers about shared patients (those who receive their care at multiple VAs or those who have care in the community) and bringing to the attention of the provider. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, administrative independence, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety as described in this standard at the specified grade level and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

5. Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect the patient flow, patient care, and the revenue process.
6. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians.

**Physical Requirements:**This position involves work that is mainly sedentary but requires some bending, walking, standing and the carrying of supplies, patient records and staff and patient mail. Some assignments may involve more frequent walking but these assignments require no unusual physical demands to perform work. The work involves regular and recurring exposure to infections materials and patients who present behavioral management problems. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other. Personal protective devises may be required as safety precautions. Incumbent is required to keep office area clean and organized.
