### Summary
This position will operate within the Veteran Transportation Service (VTS) program within the Sheridan VA Health Care System. In order to provide transportation to Veterans and their spouses who live in rural areas of the Sheridan VA Health Care System and surrounding satellite clinics catchment areas.

### Responsibilities
1. Provides non-emergent, safe transportation of eligible Veterans and cargo.
2. Operates and provides preventive maintenance for patient transport vehicles.
3. Incumbent is the first contact with the Veterans and is responsible for making the first positive impression.
4. Incumbent interacts in a courteous and respectful manner with a wide variety of people each day.
5. Incumbent is responsible for providing the VTS program office a list of Veterans who arrived at the Sheridan VA Health Care system via the VTS transportation van.
6. Incumbent is responsible to insure only eligible Veterans and their caregivers are transported to the Medical Center or satellite clinic and returned to their respective pick-up locations.

**Requirements:**

### Qualifications
* Your background must demonstrate knowledge of and skill in operating patient transport vehicles.
* Knowledge of the height, weight, width, and length of the vehicles in order to judge overhead and side clearance, the turning radius, braking distance, and safe distance to be maintained from other vehicles.
* Knowledge of safe braking distances of buses considering the extra load of passengers.
* Must possess and demonstrate good customer service skills.
* Must detect probable mechanical problems to the vehicle during operation and report to the garage mechanic any unusual noises or operating conditions.
* Knowledge of passenger safety rules including the use of seatbelts.

**EXPERIENCE:** A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.
**SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:**Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 or several in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.
**Experience** refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

**PHYSICAL EFFORT:**
Light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 45 pounds. Considerable physical efforts may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways.
Patient transport vehicle driver must be able to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping, bending, and lifting of patients. Driver must also be able to load and assist wheelchair patients, often with no assistance. Vision required from both eyes, have good depth perception, far vision, ability to distinguish basic colors and hearing (aid permitted), kneeling, standing, walking, pushing, climbing, repeated bending, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
**WORKING CONDITIONS:**
Employee works mostly outside, is exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts and bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle.
Operates vehicle in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or the equivalent), and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents.
Employee will drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. Grease and oils, solvents, excessive heat, excessive cold, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, working around machinery with moving parts, working around moving objects or vehicles, vibration,working closely with others, working alone, protracted or irregular hours of work.
